Truck Insurance Coverage Types Explained: Liability, Physical Damage & Cargo

8 min read

The core trucking coverages, explained

Commercial truck insurance is not one policy — it is a stack of coverages that work together. Understanding what each one does helps you avoid paying for protection you do not need and, more importantly, avoid gaps that could end your business after one bad claim.

Primary liability

Required by the FMCSA to operate, primary liability pays for bodily injury and property damage you cause to others in an accident. It does not cover your own truck or your freight.

Physical damage

Physical damage covers your truck and trailer for collision, theft, fire, and vandalism. Lenders almost always require it while you finance the equipment.

Motor truck cargo

Cargo coverage pays for the freight you are hauling if it is damaged, lost, or stolen in transit. Most brokers and shippers require proof of cargo coverage before they will tender a load.

Beyond these, general liability, non-trucking liability, trailer interchange, and umbrella policies round out a complete program depending on how you operate.
